What we dare not forget, however, is the fight against today’s slavery. While young women are forced into prostitution within walking distance of where we live, work or study here in Croydon, new Wilberforces must arise.
And they are. Ordinary citizens, of any faith or none, are gathering under the banner ‘Croydon Community Against Trafficking’, sharing a determination to set women free and rid our town of this cruel exploitation. Already, the police are taking action using our research. We have organised a safe house for rescued victims, with a network of women available to provide care. Young people are being educated about human trafficking in Croydon. Our campaigning is increasing pressure on Croydon’s newspapers to stop advertising adult services, many of which are actually illegal brothels.
The key to winning this war is simple: more people means more impact. We need volunteer activists to campaign, care and pray. Personally speaking, it is about putting into action the same prophetic imperative that Jesus built his ministry upon: to proclaim freedom for the captives and bind up the broken-hearted (Isaiah 61).
The part you play can be small: ten minutes to write a protest letter. Or it can be large: involvement in strategy, campaigning, educating and caring. Whoever you are, there is a part to play. You can make a difference. Please visit www.theCCAT.com or contact me directly.
