While women weep

If you’re an Internet user, the letter ‘w’ might be a little worn down by now. Every site on the World Wide Web starts with ‘www’. The letter ‘w’ gets used a lot! Can I suggest three words to think about every time you key those letters in? ‘While Women Weep.’

I make the suggestion because there are weeping women in Croydon. There are women who get used a lot and are more than a little worn down – they are broken. Croydon is host to 100 brothels and behind this thriving sex trade is the cruelty of human trafficking. Women are brought to the UK on the promise of a better life, only to find themselves modern-day slaves in one of the most developed nations in the world.

While Women Weep, what can we do? A coalition has been formed, Croydon Community Against Trafficking, with the aim of ending this injustice in the borough. The coalition has already raised the issue with the Borough Commander of Croydon Police, Croydon Council and our three Conservative MPs. The response has been encouraging, but while the brothels are not perceived as a ‘public nuisance’, little is going to be done. That means it’s up to us. Together, we can tell the authorities that citizens of Croydon will not tolerate this evil in our midst.

We invite you to join us. We have letter templates you can use to write to the authorities listed above. We also have regular meetings to pray and form strategy. To get involved, visit www.theccat.com or call me personally for more information.

It’s moving to read in the Gospels how Jesus responded to weeping women. He was never indifferent. He always acted with strength and compassion. While Women Weep in Croydon, we can follow His example.
