Ahotokurom update

The website of the friends of Ahotokurom, www.ahoto.org, is regularly updated with information from the Leprosy village we sponsor as a parish. Have a look to keep up to date with developments, and to find out more about the village.

The latest newsletter of the friends of Ahotokurom includes news of residents and others. For example, two 15-year-olds recently obtained places at St Augustine’s school. As they obtained the highest marks in their school they did not have to struggle for places (as has been the case in the past). Both of them have had health problems (one with leprosy and one with buruli ulcer) each missing three years of schooling. In spite of this they have started at their dream school but will be back to Ahoto for their holidays. We say ‘ayekoo’, meaning ‘well done’. The Friends of Ahotokurom are paying their school fees – so thank you all.

Kuful is a small village close to Ahotokurom and part of their outreach programme. Through the Sisters’ fundraising a Community Centre was built in 2004. The villagers now run a kindergarten in the Centre in the mornings. On two evenings each week visiting European students, with the help of a translator, run literacy and homework classes in four groups for mixed ages and abilities at which up to 50 youngsters attend. So the Centre is put to very good use.

There was some sorrow, and much joy recently at St Clare’s home for the elderly. A young girl, Afua Grace, who is living there with her parents, and who is mentally challenged and physically disabled was found to be pregnant. Afua has now given birth to a baby boy named Gabriel (as he was born on the feast day of The Guardian Angels). Sadly, the father, also a leprosy sufferer, has not yet come forward to take responsibility. Afua has been cared for very well by everybody and all joyfully accept the birth of a baby boy. The challenge now is how to give Afua Grace the space and support she will need to be the mother to this baby. Your prayers for this young woman and her child would be appreciated.
