The future of the hall

We are very fortunate in having a centrally-heated hall complete with well-equipped kitchen (and a nice, new parish room) next door to St Columba’s. It is a valued facility from which we parishioners get a great deal of benefit. And of course we all want to keep it that way.

As was pointed out at a recent parish meeting on the future use of our hall, in order to keep the use of this valued facility in the future there are going to need to be some changes in how it operates. Unfortunately, in the past the hall has not always been as well looked after by users as it might have been. That needs to change. Why? Because, as a result of the introduction of new health, safety and hygiene regulations, there is now a risk that our hall could be closed down if it isn’t maintained to the necessary high standards. None of us wants that.

In order to make sure the worst does not happen, there are in future going to be strict, new guidelines applying to anyone using the hall. Basically, that comes down to ensuring that it is kept thoroughly clean, neat and tidy at all times.

To help make that happen and to comply with those new regulations some alterations are going to be made. They will include:

Arrangements will be put in hand to ensure regular replacement of dish cloths and the laundering of towels and tea towels.

However, the main emphasis will be on all groups – everyone - making sure they clean up thoroughly every time they use any of these facilities. As well as brooms and dustpan and brush, a vacuum cleaner and steam cleaner will be available for that purpose. There will also be a checklist drawn up so that problems can be identified for future action – and anyone who doesn’t clean up will be given a diplomatic reminder….

As part of all this a caretaker is going to oversee the hall and make sure that the new standards are maintained. Bookings will be channelled through a parishioner who is going to keep a diary of parish events and handle all enquiries about availability. Further details of those arrangements will be confirmed in due course.
