Retirement

Parishoner Margarete Evans retired in August, having worked in the NHS for more than 50 years. Margarete started nursing in September 1950, and joined Mayday Hospital’s nursing staff in 1954. She transferred from general nursing to cardiology in 1956.

In 1968, Margarete set up the pilot scheme for clinical coding in Croydon. This post required a mixture of clinical and administrative skills, and provides data for the statistics maintained by the NHS and the World Health Organisation (WHO). Mayday is keen to keep Margarete’s skills in this area, and she will be returning one day a week to continue the work.

Having worked in all the hospitals in the Mayday group – Queen’s, Waddon, Norwood Cottage hospital, Purley, Croydon General, as well as Mayday itself – Margarete has seen many changes in the NHS in Croydon – including the closure of most of the above hospitals. She has also seen changes in nursing practice. All of this is recognised and appreciated by her colleagues at Mayday, and on 26th September, Margarete will be a special guest at the formal presentation of Mayday’s annual report. She will be speaking of her experiences to an audience which will include the Mayor of Croydon.

We wish Margarete a happy and healthy retirement.

Top tutor!

Congratulations to parishioner Denis O’Brien, a part-time tutor at the Open University Business School, who has just been named the School’s Tutor of the Year. Denis, who tutors an MBA module on creativity, innovation and change, tells us he hopes publicity about his award might focus attention on the opportunities offered by the Open University, and is happy to talk to anyone in the parish who may be considering enrolling for an OU course.
