Tsunami Disaster - December 26th .2004
This earthquake came from out of the sea
Sit back and look at yourselves real close

The children’s concert
A good time was had by all on 11 February at the Children’s Concert in aid of the Asian Tsunami disaster. What started out as an idea for a general concert quickly developed into a young peoples’ concert as youngsters from St Columba’s and the local area asked to take part. Lucy was the youngest at the tender age of 6, but others were not much older and for several it was their first public performance. However terrified the participants were, they all rose to the occasion.
The choir greeted the audience with two short African pieces sung in harmony and the evening was rounded off by gloriously witty renditions of Old Mother Hubbard and The Little Brown Owl by Ann Tugwell, who, although notably older than most of the performers, was welcomed to the proceedings as she was the first to volunteer her services.
In between, we had a wonderful rendition of Disney’s Colours of the Wind by three of the guides and Amazing Grace, I got Rhythm and A Merry Dance performed by Veronica, Louise and Vicky, with Anna giving us a fabulous recital of Smiling written by her grandfather. Philip, Isabel and Lucy entertained us by playing the piano, Francesca and Joseph the clarinet, Hannah, Georgia, Caspar and Oscar the violin, Sophie and Michael the cello and Madelaine on the flute, who won over the crowd with her rendition of The Snowman.
Phil Pond did a wonderful job as compere as did the UCM on the refreshments side. Several of the choir contributed raffle prizes and the evening raised £610 which was donated to Cafod. I would like to extend my hearty thanks to all those who took part or helped and I hope this is not the last such event as many people remarked on the wonderful and hitherto unheralded talents of our youngsters.
Jacqueline Aldhous Coins in a row
It shocked the world, we could not believe
One of the Holiest days of the year
It was like a ‘Great Act of God’
Giving us a message from out of the ‘fog’.
Such riches and splendour in great abundance
Look to each other and help and pray in repose
Give up the material life and care for each other
Be courteous and kind and don’t think just of yourself.
When you smile, you receive one back, people look round and bend
It’s very contagious and gives a good feel glow
When you have tried this out, you must surely know
If only we could all be caring and sharing like this all year round
(Jan. l7th.two and a half million raised in one day)
Then God would feel the big ‘Secret’ has been found!!!!!
| The 9th Selsdon Brownies attempted to break the world record for coppers in a row and managed 100 mtrs – they’re awaiting to hear back from the Guinness World of Records to find out whether they’ve been successful but in the meantime they’ve raised nearly £55 for the victims of the Tsunami disaster. Well done girls! |
