Beth Francis' recommended reading

Thanks to Francesca Laidlaw for this report of her interview with Beth Francis, on the subject ’My Favourite books’. Francesca and Beth are both eleven years old.

I have lots of favourite books, Harry Potter (J.K. Rowling), Dark is Rising Sequence (Susan Cooper), Invisible, Noughts and Crosses, Knife Edge (Malorie Blackman), lots of books. More than I can mention really!

Overall my favourite book is probably something between Harry Potter and The Dark is Rising. I like Harry Potter because it is magical, and really fun to read about all the wizarding world and us, `Muggles'. I like The Dark is Rising because it has a really good plot, and I like the character `Uncle Merryman' best because at first I thought he was just an old man and then as the first book continued it became obvious he was a powerful wizard, like Merlin.

Least Favourite Books
I don't really have very many - any! - least favourite books. I have quite a few least favourite characters mind... In the Darren Shan books, Mr. Tiny is a right nuisance. Him and his yellow wellies! In the Harry Potter books, I really like Sirius Black. He is so... special., I don't really know how!!! Least favourite, Beatrice, the witch in the fifth book, who kills Sirius. How dare she!!! In Darren Shan, my favourite person is Kurda, because even though he betrayed the clan, he was trying to help.

I would recommend...
Well, it depends on what kind of book you want. If you want mystery, Nancy Drew is very good - she kept me guessing... Magic, Harry Potter or Susan Cooper. Real life, Noughts and Crosses, Knife Edge... And, Darren Shan, `pretend diary’.
Funny books. Phillip Ardagh is definitely my favourite (especially his Eddie Dickens books). Philip Ardagh even makes learning history funny! Michel L's Jiggy Mac cue I really like too.
